Ninja-Boy

February 8th, 2010

Ninja-Boy,

Hey, buddy. I normally write these letters in your book, but today I felt like sharing how amazing you are with everyone. You can strut around like a peacock when you get home from school. I won’t tell anyone. Promise.

The last few months for you have been packed with new things. Because you are doing so well in school you’ve been moved to a different class. Of course, you spent a lot of time in Mrs. Hicks’s class before, so you were excited to spend even more time in there. At first, anyway. Now you realize that being in her class means that more is expected of you. More work done at a quicker pace (but there is plenty of play time, too). As you have noted, doing more work stinks. I can not disagree with you, but you are so smart and so capable. Never forget that. Also, never forget that once the work is done the play is more fun. Are you sick of me saying that yet?

At home you continue to be head over heels in love with your sister. You will often sit next to her and watch whatever she is doing – video games, playing on the computer, drawing, watching grass grow – it doesn’t matter. Mermaid usually loves this, and she will often say, “Come on, Ninja-Boy, let’s go play,” and you will run after her. What she isn’t used to is the fact that you now state your opinions on everything, so she no longer gets to be Queen Supreme. This has been an adjustment for both of you. You do not know why she doesn’t listen to you, and she does not know why you have an opinion in the first place. [Side Note: To say that both of you are hard-headed is an understatement. A trait, by the way, that you both inherited directly from your father.] This all boils down to the fact that there have been more arguments between you and Mermaid lately. Some days it drives me crazy, but I am honestly glad that you are talking and stating your feelings so openly. That makes me very, very happy.

Legos are another big love of yours. You build all sorts of creations, destroy them, and build some more. You always ask for kits, but you never actually build the toy according to the directions. You pick out your favorite pieces and combine them to create some very cool toys. I always enjoy seeing what you make. The rock monster airplane with the elephant trunk to suck up the bad guys was one of my absolute favorites. Too cool.

Mornings are still my favorite time of day with you. You wake up and immediately want a hug. You whisper good morning in my ear and lay your head on my shoulder. I love that, and I look forward to it every day. You aren’t a baby anymore, but I enjoy so much that you are my little boy.

There are moments when I know I have been blessed. Moments when I still myself and take in everything I’m feeling because what I’m feeling is utter and complete joy. You have been the catalyst for so many of those moments for me. I hope when those moments come to you that you will be still and take them in. They are worth stopping for. Thank you for making me stop so often.

I love you.

Snow Day

February 6th, 2010

The snow continues to come down here on the East Coast. Digging out is going to be nothing short of an adventure. Until then I’ll be here, nice and cozy, working on projects and drinking hot coffee. You know, just like every other weekend.

Enjoy the snow if you’ve got it. Stay safe no matter where you are, and have a good weekend!

Gettin’ a Baby

February 3rd, 2010

Ninja-Boy: I like babies.

Me: I like babies, too.

Ninja-Boy: We should get a baby!

Me: Well buddy, I think we are all done getting babies in this house. You were my last baby.

Ninja-Boy: We could get a girl baby.

Me: We have Mermaid!

Ninja-Boy: I want a baby. Yes, I want a baby or a Pikachu.

Me: Well, buddy… you are much more likely to get a Pikachu than a baby. Just so you know.

Ninja-Boy: Cool.

Me: Cool.
